Cover Letter Checklist

Document set up   
  • Good quality paper: white, off white, gray 
  • Standard fonts, 11 or 12 point 
  • Text arranged in standard block format with 1” margins  
  • Complete return address includes telephone and e-mail address 
General format 
  • Keep length of letter to 3-4 paragraphs and less than one page 
  • Write to satisfy employer needs and requirements, keep in mind employers point of view  
  • Use brief and concise content  
  • Highlight important information, such as the position for which you are applying 
Opening paragraph 
  • Make a connection between you and reader such as how you learned about the position (referral, suggestion, article, ad.)   
  • Give precise name of position for which you are applying 
  • State the reason for your interest in the opportunity offered by the position 
  • Include a reference to the company, such as mention of a current project or reputation 
2nd paragraph 
  • Provide information that directly relates to the job  
  • Communicate what you have to offer the organization; include one or two qualifications (experience, training, etc.) that would especially meet the needs of the company 
  • Provide most recent training 
Closing paragraph 
  • Ask for action using appropriate language   
  • If you are out-of-town – indicate what period of time you would be in town for an interview 
  • List any enclosures at the end of the letter (resume, copy of license, diploma, certificate, etc.) 
Final review 
  • Double check format 
  • Proofread hard copy for typos, spelling, or grammar errors 
  • Does the letter focus on elements that relate to the job and connect with your resume? 
  • Does the letter present your interest in the position? 
  • Does the letter express reasons why you are an ideal candidate for the job? 
  • If you were the employer, would you be interested in learning more in a personal interview?
